Vision Screening Campaign in Assam

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care. Access to health care and equitable distribution of health services are the fundamental requirements. Many backward and remote areas in our country lack basic health care infrastructure limiting access to health services at present. A large number of people in rural areas are unable to seek medical help due to variety of economic and social problems. “The groundwork of all happiness is good health”. Basic health care and health assurance seem to be a distant dream for underprivileged people. Eyesight is one of the most important and valued senses we have. Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for everyone regardless of age or physical health.

625 million people around the world are avoidably vision impaired or blind because they don’t have access to eye care. At some point in our life need of vision correction is necessary. The simple fact is that by around 45 years old, every person in the world begins to experience the need for vision correction as their eyes naturally age.

Acknowledging the road to provide necessary eye care, Rehab India Foundation joined hands with Fakoruddin Ali Ahamed Hospital organized Free Vision Screening campaign in the Rehab Model Village, Bongaigaon of Assam on 14.10.2014. Dr. (Mr) Banerjee, Eye Specialist, examined the patients and provided his excellent service. More than 60 villagers got their eyes examined and were advices on post check-up surgery. The beneficiaries of the Camp are now eligible for free surgeries in Fakoruddin Ali Ahamed Hospital situated in Barpeta, Assam.

The programme was successfully coordinated by Mr. Sadagar Ali, Field Officer, MSW Final year student of Rehab India Foundation.

Needless to say, this was indeed a great opportunity for the underprivileged in our area of operations, which forms part of our Social Upliftment Programme.

This initiative of the Rehab India Foundation go a long way in enhancing out-reach of medical services to the remotest areas. We, the team of Rehab India Foundation, stand to achieve our goal. Empowering people throughout the backward and rural region to reach out and improve their standard of living with our best possible services and support. We take pride in that.

Rural Library Inauguration in Assam

“The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page”. The concept of Rehab Rural Library started as a scintilla from the request from few poor village students. The students requested Rehab to help them with subject guides, dictionaries, etc. This enthusiasm and eagerness of the children prompted the Rehab team-Assam to start the Rehab Rural Library.

A library is a treasure-house of knowledge. It helps a good deal in spreading knowledge and education. A well-stocked library is an asset.

There was no Library in the vicinity of 20 kms surrounding the village. To guide and support the children, Rehab decided to establish a library, for which, the students of various schools and colleges were requested to contribute the books during the Book Donation Campaign held from 10th January 2014 to 31st January 2014. Almost 90 percent of the books were collected in this Book Donation Campaign. 340 books which cost around 21,371/- rupees were collected.

After a course of one month for the mobilization of the collected books, Rehab inaugurated The Rehab Rural Library successfully on 29th September 2014, in the Model Village – Hapachara Gram Panchayat – Bongaigoan District, Assam. Md.Hussain, Social worker, Chatipur, Chirang district, Mr. Soudagar, In-charge-officer, 26 and 46 numbers of boys and girls, and few of the villagers were present in the event.

TB Awareness Program in Rehab Model Village

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Everywhere a person looks, and everywhere a person’s eye can see, there are people struggling with so many diseases. Tuberculosis is one among them. In order to provide social and psychological support and the necessary knowledge and information about the disease, Rehab India Foundation organized Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign. Tuberculosis is more common than we may actually think. About one-third of the world’s population is currently infected with Tuberculosis, with one new infection occurring every second.

India has approximately two to three million people infected by Tuberculosis and was the highest TB burden country with World Health Organization (WHO) statistics for 2011. Tuberculosis remains one of the largest on India's health and wellness scale and is the biggest health issue that lies around India.

26 October 2014, Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign was coordinated by Mr. Sadagar, Field Officer & MSW Final year student of Rehab in the Model Village of Assam. The campaign was conducted by Dr. (Mr) H. Sarkar (D.T.O) and Dr. (Mr) Bishwajit Roy (S.T.S) from Bongaigaon Civil Hospital, Bongaigaon of Assam.

The main objective of the awareness campaign was to advert to this public health problem and provide the public with the necessary information and knowledge about tuberculosis. The Doctors also explained the rural folks of diagnosing the diseases earlier so that it can be treated soon and can be halted from spreading further.

Even though our government is taking all the efficient steps to prevent the diseases and improve the health care of the people, all the schemes and strategies introduced by the government is not reaching the people living in the remotest areas of our country.

Rehab India Foundation empowers people throughout the backward and rural region to reach out and improve their standard of living with our best possible services and support. Pundit Nehru on knowing the importance of education to children of our country included and highlighted the point in his five years plan that every child in India would get free and compulsory primary education. Over thousands of schools were built throughout the villages of India when he was in power.

In the present situation of our country, we cannot hide the fact that many children in India are not getting basic privileges like education. Many children are earning money instead of playing with toys.

Children's Day celebration is the tribute to childhood. John Kennedy, 35th US president has quoted it rightly, “Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future”.

The true essence of children's day is to understand the significance of childhood and support the children with what they actually need in their life. Rehab India Foundation is striving hard to support the children and working towards creating child friendly society, where all children are free from exploitation and receive quality education.

What a dilemma!

The persons who sacrificed to brighten our future are forced by us to get out from our lives when they grow old…

In this so-called modern society, everything has reserved. The clear idea has shown by our younger generation that how they dub their elder by rejecting them as old-fashioned. Without any regret majority among us crush emotions, sentiments and disrespect honour and dignity of parents and grand parents.

Thanks God for our Government of India, some private and nonprofit institutions that they have started working for old-age homes otherwise maximum poor parents and grand pas would have to live on the street. Even, we should appreciate our Indian culture that at least we have been learning from our childhood to respect elders by choice or by forcefully. Otherwise, majority would not hesitate to say goodbye to parents because they are not comfortable to return little bit to them.

Listen! Among many non profit organizations, Rehab is one of them. It aims to sensitise the youth where it is active and one of the prime location is the Model Village in Assam where recently it has celebrated Elderly Day.

Rehab celebrated Elder Day at Rehab Model Village in Assam. Total 73 parents and grand parents participated. They arranged to realise the beauty of their time-the beauty of their culture, values and norms. They were called to experience their lost respect and power when they were supposed to be the head of their family.

Different competitions were organised to entertain them. During Ghazal competitions, five participants from each group participated enthusiastically in the programme. And, quiz competition was organised between both the groups. At the end, prizes were distributed to the winners.

Interacting with Mr. Saravana Kumar, Project Manager, he said, “The programme was organised to listen oldage people. They have lot of things which they would like to share but due to neglection they have glued their lips. But this is our duty to sensitise our people that if you are doing wrong with their parents then they have to be ready for their turn because their kids will learn from their behaviour.”
